Working Equitation in Spain
Spain is one of the three countries (together with France and Italy) which started to develop Working Equitation. Spain participated in the first International Working Equitation Championships. After a few years, Spain stopped participating in Working Equitation and we were out of the discipline for several years. However, in 2015, the Spanish Equestrian Federation signed the protocol with WAWE starting to compete again and developing the competition in Spain. As a result of this work, we had organised some international competitions in such symbolic places as CECyL (Segovia)and inside the ramparts of the medieval town of Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca).
The discipline started to grow very fast and the riders started to reach good marks immediately because Working Equitation is strongly connected with our traditions and our riders are used to ride horses with one hand using the garrocha daily as they do in the farms with the cattle.
After having a period of learning in international competitions, Spain got the silver medal in the last Senior and Junior World Championships (2022 and 2023), showing the level and the improvement of our riders.
Although we don’t have a lot of participants in our national competitions, our riders have been able to compete in high levels in international ones. This year, we’re organizing our fifth Spanish Championship and the name of a new rider is going to be written together with José Antonio Olea, José Rodríguez Cívico and Sebastián López García who are the previous winners of the Spanish Championship. In this season, we are feeling very proud of our Juniors riders because they showed a very good level despite the short period of training and this give us wings to keep on working since we can see the future of the discipline in our country, and names such as Juan Conesa, Rocío Moreno, Jose Antonio Olea Jr, Alfonso Martín, Daniel Lama, Estefanía Hollom and many others will keep our results in International Championship in the future.
Last but not the least, we are really proud to organice the next World Championship in 2026 in the facilities of “La Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre” in Jerez de la Frontera that is known as the “Capital of the horses” in Spain. All of you are invited to enjoy the Spanish hospitality.
